Stratifying Food, Body, and Health: Exploring Socially Dominant Narrative across the Community Nutrition Landscape
Tuesday, October 22, 2024 (1:00 PM - 2:00 PM) (EDT)
Description
During this 60 minute session, participants will be guided through the complex interplay between social identities and how they influence the current nutrition education landscape. Assisted by Patrilie, the session facilitator, participants will be able to examine how socially dominant identities influence the narratives around food, body, and health, and how these narratives can perpetuate systemic inequities. Be part of this insightful discussion that challenges conventional narratives and seeks to foster a more equitable and inclusive approach to nutrition education. By understanding the influence of socially dominant identities, we can begin to dismantle barriers and create more just food systems for all.
Objectives:
- Explain how hierarchized binaries relate to social identities and their proximity to ‘power.’
- Examine structural determinants of health and how the mainstream narrative around healthy eating perpetuates systemic racism and colonialism.
- Describe how social identities can make the pursuit of "health" more accessible or more challenging.
- Discuss how socially dominant identity groups influence beliefs and practices in community nutrition work
