Voices of Health Equity: Applying a Trauma-Informed Approach to Nutrition Security Supports in Medical Settings

Thursday, February 13, 2025 (12:00 PM - 1:00 PM) (EST)

Description

Session Description

Integrating nutrition security supports into medical settings is now a leading practice for communities with high rates of food insecurity and lifestyle conditions. These programs may be a part of Food as/is Medicine initiatives, Medicare waiver programs (such as CA’s Cal-AIM), partnerships with nutrition incentive programs, SNAP-Ed, SNAP, or charitable food.

Conversations frequently center around structure, eligibility, and funding. But in this session, we’ll consider the building blocks of these interventions through the lens of trauma and resilience.  What do medical providers, CBO staff, and other professionals need to know about trauma-informed nutrition security to implement these supports effectively?  Sharing lessons from extensive work in Indiana and California, participants will learn from on-the-ground best practices.

Presentation Format

This session will be a 75% presentation of trauma-informed strategies and evaluation data from medical provider training in Indiana over the past year. We plan to include brief videos from two participants. We’ll use Menti to involve the audience comments and perspectives. We will leave time for live Q&A.

Session Takeaways

Attendees will come away with the following learnings:

  • Participants will connect the science of trauma and resilience with patient experiences with nutrition insecurity.
  • Participants will learn simple strategies for bringing a trauma-informed approach to any patient conversation or communication.
  • Participants will consider implicit and explicit assumptions around healthy eating and physical activity messages and learn reframing strategies to create equitable and inclusive communication.
